Collaboration and partnerships among organizations, agencies, and child-serving systems are critical for supporting all students. Partnerships are based on a shared vision, resources, and goals or outcomes.
SS/HS encourages a variety of collaborative partnerships in order to effectively promote wellness of youth and families. These include working relationships between states and their local communities (or local education agencies) as well as a wide variety of stakeholders (including youth and families) at the community level. For instance, SS/HS grantees will create both a State Management Team (SMT) that includes representatives from state education, behavioral health (i.e., mental health and substance use), and criminal/juvenile justice agencies as well as a Core Management Team (CMT) with their local education, behavioral health, law enforcement, and juvenile justice agencies. Additional partners could include child welfare, early childhood, faith-based community organizations, foundations, community coalitions, and family and youth representatives.

The nearly 14,000 students in the Santa Fe School District now have better access to organizations and resources that help reduce problem behavior and promote violence-free schools.
Orange County Public Schools (OCPS), Florida – Orlando, FL
A high percentage of families in Orange County move frequently. Because of this, OCPS gathered early childhood service providers and partners from mental health organizations, law-enforcement agencies, and the Department of Children and Families to discuss what steps needed to be taken to help the county’s children start kindergarten ready to learn, socially and emotionally.

Provides an updated version of the definition and the accompanying values and principles, clarifies the intended use of the updated framework and philosophy, outlines challenges for research and evaluation, and suggests areas needing greater emphasis as we continue to address children’s mental health in the future.
