In September of 2013, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) was one of seven states awarded the Safe Schools/Healthy Students (SS/HS) grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Wisconsin’s SS/HS grant initiative is a collaborative effort between the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Department of Health Services, and the Racine, Beloit, and Menominee Indian school districts. The broad statewide partnership engages education, behavioral health, juvenile justice, families, youth and other local partners at the state level and within the three school communities.
To address students’ mental health needs, Wisconsin’s DPI integrated Safe Schools/Healthy Students (SS/HS) funding with other federal funding opportunities; passed school mental health (SMH) policy along with the first ever SMH appropriation to expand access to mental health services across the state; target and reduce identified disparities for students; and effectively engage and partner with students and families in these processes.
