Michigan Collaboration and Partnership

The Michigan Health and Education Partnership (MHEP) was created and expanded from its original SS/HS structure to facilitate bidirectional communication among state and local partners to support best practices, integration, and services that contribute to successful educational, physical, and behavioral health outcomes for all children and families.

The first part is the alignment of goals and objectives across three grants: Safe Schools/Healthy Students (SS/HS), Project AWARE (PA) and the Promoting Positive School Climate (PPSC). The MHEP is used as a platform to install the integration of local and state level health and education systems within Michigan, and leads cross agency efforts with a newly developed and adopted mission and vision. To sustain these efforts, multiple organizations are working together sharing this mission and vision, resources, goals and outcomes:

MHEP Mission: The Michigan Health & Education Partnership is a collaboration of culturally responsive systems that supports, sustains, enhances, and influences best practices to support children and families in their mental/physical/social emotional well-being, so that all students are college and career ready.

MHEP Vision: A comprehensive, multi-tiered, community based system that provides best practices, integrated partnerships, and agency services to contribute to successful educational, physical, and behavioral health outcomes for all children and families.

The next phase is to expand and sustain MHEP using feedback from a collaboration survey and taking a deeper dive to explore institutionalizing practices learned from local schools, and continue efforts to come out of cross system, cross agency, and cross departmental silos at the state and local levels. The MI Department of Education is recognizing the need to move away from just supporting academics, and towards supporting the whole child through health and education models developed through state and local collaboration, and further bringing awareness and education to stakeholders through the MHEP.
